Together with several first response agencies and corporate first response teams, A/TCEMS responds to over 116,000 requests for aid each year. The department has a staff of over 400, a budget of approximately $40M and collects revenue for direct services of over $20M.

Medical Direction is provided by a full-time EMS physician.  A/TCEMS provides excellent clinical care with state of the art equipment and highly trained Paramedics.  A/TCEMS covers approximately 1100 square miles and serves a population of 998,543.

The department was created by municipal ordinance in 1975 to provide the citizens of Austin a reliable and quality service for emergency pre-hospital medical rescue. It operates under a third service model as an independent city department that is separate from fire and police. Unique from its inception, A/TCEMS remains one of the leading municipally operated third service EMS systems in the country.
