Themes and Priority Programs

Vision: The Oceans and Coastal Protection Division (OCPD) envisions clean and safe oceans and coasts that sustain human health, the environment, and the economy.

Mission: The mission of OCPD is to protect and restore our ocean and coastal ecosystems by promoting watershed-based coastal management, preventing pollution of the marine environment, monitoring and assessing coastal conditions, and establishing effective partnerships.

New Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force
On June 12, 2009, President Obama sent a memorandum to the heads of executive departments and federal agencies establishing an Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force, led by the White House Council on Environmental Quality. The Task Force is charged with developing a recommendation for a national policy that ensures protection, maintenance, and restoration of oceans, our coasts and the Great Lakes. It will also recommend a framework for improved stewardship, and effective coastal and marine spatial planning. Peter Silva, EPA's Assistant Administrator for Water, serves on the Task Force with other senior-level Administration officials.
