Compare Policy Coverages

CHOOSING THE RIGHT INSURANCE TO MEET YOUR NEEDS.

Choosing which homeowners, condominium or tenant policy is right for you can be difficult and confusing. The Office of Public Insurance Counsel (OPIC) has devised an interactive comparison chart to help you with this very important decision.

THIS CHART IS FOR COMPARISON AND INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY.

The comparison chart is based on the most recent information provided to the Office of Public Insurance Counsel (OPIC) by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). Every effort has been made to keep the information accurate and up to date. However it is always important to check with an agent or company prior to purchasing a policy to ensure the information provided by the chart is consistent with what the company is currently offering.

The comparison chart displays a summary of coverages provided by the policies listed and is not a substitute for the actual policy language. The perils listed on the comparison chart were picked as representative of those perils most important to Texas consumers. The policy form you choose may cover additional perils not shown on the comparison chart. Always consult your actual policy language to determine the full extent of your coverage.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW TO GET THE MOST FROM THIS CHART:

ARE THERE ANY POLICY FORMS THAT ARE WRITTEN BY MORE THAN ONE COMPANY?

YES. Some policy forms can be written by different companies. This will be noted in red next to the policy form name.

ARE COMPANIES ALLOWED TO MARKET SEVERAL DIFFERENT POLICY FORMS?

YES. These policies are listed separately under the company name. Prior to choosing a policy from the chart, ask the agent or company representative which policies will be offered to you to ensure that you will be comparing the proper policy.

WHY CAN’T I FIND A SPECIFIC COMPANY ON THE CHART?

If you can’t find a homeowners company listed on the chart below, it may be because the company is a Farm Mutual or a Surplus Lines company which is not required to file its policy forms with TDI.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The standard HO-B (homeowners), HO-B-CON (condominium) and HO-BT (renters) typically offer the broadest coverage readily available to Texas consumers for their particular dwelling types. OPIC recommends comparing one of these standard policy forms to other policy forms you may be considering.

  • Companies can add endorsements to your policy that alter the coverage offered in the base policy. If a company offers or requires an endoresment that affects the coverages displayed on the chart, those changes will be noted. However, since the comparison chart may not show all perils covered by a particular policy form, it is important for you to ask the agent or company if any endorsements will be added to your policy.

  • The complaint index and disciplinary history of a company is a very important aspect of choosing the right insurance company. The TDI website has this information as part of each company’s profile. To access that information please click CLICK HERE

  • Condominium policies only cover your personal property and the interior walls, ceiling and floors of the dwelling. No coverage is provided for the exterior of the building. Renters policies only cover your personal property. Renters policies do not cover any portion of the dwelling.

You have the option of comparing homeowners, condominium or renters policies. Please choose the type of policy you want to compare and click "next."
