When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of chronic diseases, good nutrition is key.  It’s more than just a matter of individual choice; rather our environments must support healthy eating by providing access to affordable, plentiful healthy foods.  The following strategies are crucial in efforts aimed at obesity prevention and chronic disease control:

  • Increasing fruit and vegetables;
  • Controlling portion sizes;
  • Decreasing sugar-sweetened beverages;
  • Calorie balance (balancing what you eat with your activity level); and
  • Breastfeeding.

Texans are currently not meeting the recommendations (PDF, 67 kb) for the above strategies, and our program is striving to help Texans eat healthier by making the nutritious choice the easy choice throughout Texas communities.
