Kyle Janek has served as a state Senator for Senate District 17, which includes parts of Harris, Fort Bend, Brazoria, Galveston, Chambers and Jefferson counties, since November 2002. After serving for eight years in the House of Representatives, Janek currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Emerging Technologies & Economic Development, as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Business & Commerce, and serves as a member of the Education Committee, the Subcommittee on Higher Education, the Finance Committee, the Subcommittee on Capital Funding for Higher Education, and the Health & Human Services Committee.

Since the end of the 78th legislative session, he has served as chairman of the Workgroup on Revenue that will assist the Senate members of the Joint Select Committee on Public School Finance, and as a member of both the Joint Interim Committee on Higher Education and the Legislative Oversight Committee on Higher Education. At the end of 2003, he was appointed by the Lieutenant Governor to the Select Committee on Workers' Compensation.

After the 2003 session, Janek made the Texas Realtor Honor Roll for his work on issues important to property owners in Texas. In addition, the Texas Association of Business designated him a Fighter For Free Enterprise, the Texas Hospital Association presented him the Texas Hospital Advocacy Tribute in recognition of outstanding legislative leadership on health care issues, and Preservation Texas honored him for his contributions to historic preservation.

He serves as a board member of the Texas Conservative Coalition, The University of Houston Law Center Health Law and Policy Institute, and the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, and on the American Legislative Exchange Council's Health And Human Services Task Force. He was also invited by the Texas General Land Office Commissioner to serve on the Steering Committee of Coastal Texas 2020, a partnership of all coastal stakeholders to identify issues of importance along the Texas coast and to develop long-term, coast-wide strategies to address these issues.

Janek and his wife Shannon have three sons, Ryan, Will and Luke. They live in West University Place and are active members of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, where he serves on the Associate Vestry.
