ERS - Employee Retirement System
Insurance benefits for other retirement systems

ERS administers insurance benefits for employees of other retirement systems. View the eligibility for GBP insurance at retirement for information on qualifying for health insurance in retirement.

These systems are part of the proportionate retirement program. This means that you can combine your service to retire.

Teachers Retirement System (TRS) and Optional Retirement Program (ORP)

ERS administers insurance benefits for TRS employees and retirees.

Your retirement benefit is handled by TRS, the Teacher Retirement System. TRS retirees who are eligible for the insurance should fill out the TRS/ORP Retiree Initial Insurance Enrollment Form (524 KB PDF) and submit it to your benefits coordinator. For more information about your retirement benefit, contact TRS at (512) 542-6400 or (800) 223-8778 or visit the TRS website.

Optional Retirement Program service purchase eligibility

Some employees who work at colleges and universities have the choice of paying into the Optional Retirement Program (ORP). (ORP is governed by the Higher Education Coordinating Board.) ORP service credit can help you qualify for ERS insurance in retirement, but it will not increase your annuity. To use ORP credit to help you retire under ERS, have the college or university fill out the Verification of Optional Retirement Participation form (80 KB PDF) and send it to ERS.

ORP members must return to state employment before buying refunded state service.

Texas Municipal Retirement System

ERS administers insurance benefits for TMRS employees and retirees.

Your retirement benefit is handled by TMRS, the Texas Municipal Retirement System. For more information about your retirement benefit, contact TMRS at (512) 476-7577 or toll-free at (800) 924-8677 or visit the TMRS website.

Texas County and District Retirement System

ERS administers insurance benefits for TCDRS employees and retirees.

Your retirement benefit is handled by TCDRS, the Texas County & District Retirement System. For more information about your retirement benefit, contact TCDRS at (512) 328-8889 or (800) 823-7782 or visit the TCDRS website.
