Snakes

Did you know snakes have backbones and smell with their tongues? Join us in learning about the behavior and adaptations of one of nature's most fascinating and misunderstood creatures. We'll provide you with a general introduction to reptiles, as well as an opportunity to meet and touch a live, gentle snake.

Amphibians

Learn about these amazing creatures, some of which breathe through their skin, others that live in total darkness. Discuss the differences between reptiles and amphibians. Hike with park staff through the park to discover and observe local amphibians.

Shoreline Ecology

Come explore and learn about the fascinating and diverse world of the freshwater shoreline. Discover firsthand the unique biological communities that reside there, including how these invertebrates, vertebrates and plants interact with one another.

Discovery Hike at Hamilton Pool

Explore the wild side of Hamilton Pool! This 232-acre preserve bordering Hamilton Creek and the Pedernales River is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life. Enjoy a quided hike filled with impromptu discoveries.

Ecology Fair

Turn an ecology lesson into a fun, outdoor fair! The program opens with a short discussion about the park visitors' role in keeping the balance between the human and the natural side of parks. Then your group will discover the world of ecology by moving through a series of hands-on stations.Topics covered may include birds, reptiles, amphibians, prairies and riparian habitat. Participants will also play an ecology game. Program Specialists will conduct the Ecology Carnival in a Travis County Park that is best situated for you group.

Nature, Wildlife and Ecology

Adopt-A-Park Program

You can help enhance prudent stewardship of Travis County Parks through partnerships with citizens of Travis County and other park visitors. Individuals, companies or organizations who participate in the Adopt-A-Park program agree to volunteer their time and manpower working on various improvement projects in the parks. Any group or individual may adopt a Travis County Park (or sections of a park). For more information, call (512) 854-PARK (7275).

Guided Hikes at Hamilton Pool

Join us on a guided hike through Hamilton Pool Preserve. Our tour begins in the dry uplands and descends 80 feet into a canyon which features a wide diversity of native plants and animals. Along the way, learn about the history of Hamilton Pool and how its unique geological features were formed. The tour ends at the collapsed grotto, waterfall and pool. Reminder: Limited to first 15 people. No pets are allowed in the Preserve. Be sure to bring your own drinking water.

Cost: $8.00 per vehicle to enter the Preserve.

Time: Every Sunday at 10 AM. The tour lasts about an hour.

Note: Tours may be postponed or canceled due to inclement weather. Call the preserve for swimming and trail conditions before you leave home.
