Board Formed to Regulate Practice of Optometry

2009
Today most optometrists are Therapeutic Optometrists & Optometric Glaucoma Specialists. These doctors of optometry are licensed to provide the health care listed on this chart:
Laser surgery co-management, glaucoma and low vision
diagnosis and treatment, vision therapy and
training, and diagnosis and treatment of eye disease and disorders. Click here for more information about these procedures and optometry

All optometrists may determine powers of vision and write contact lens and eyeglass prescriptions, but in the 21st century, Optometry is the "primary eye care profession"

Texas Optometry Act
State law, the Texas Optometry Act, authorizes the Texas Optometry Board to regulate the practice of optometry. The Optometry Act requires the Board to carefully screen applicants for an optometry license, insure that optometrists are eligible to renew their license on an annual basis, set fees, and investigate complaints. The Board has adopted rules to explain and enforce state law.
