Approximately 2,500,000 people in the United States have some form of
epilepsy. In Texas it is estimated there are at least 193,000 people who
have epilepsy with over 8,500 new cases diagnosed each year. Epilepsy
is a chronic neurological condition characterized by abnormal electrical
discharges in the brain manifested as two or more seizures. There are
more than 29 different seizure disorders. Prompt detection and early medical
intervention can greatly improve seizure control and the patient's quality
of life.
Epilepsy Services of the Department of State Health Services provides
comprehensive outpatient services (diagnostic,
treatment and support services) to eligible
persons who have been diagnosed with epilepsy and/or seizure-like symptoms
through contracted providers in select service
areas in the State of Texas.
