Sunday Night Session

Texas.  It's a big state.  And it's got a lot of great music.  Host David Furst tries to cram in as much as possible on Sunday Night Session every week.  If you're a musician and you lived in Texas for at least some part of your career – you're fair game.  And remember, SNS always sounds better when dipped in a little barbeque sauce.

David Furst began working as an announcer on KPAC in 1996, shortly after a move to San Antonio.  Soon after that, his love for Texas Music led him to take over the reins of Sunday Night Session.  David left Texas in 1997, but still produces Sunday Night Session from his current home base of Washington, D.C., where he also works full time as the host of Metro Connection on WAMU.  Born and raised in New Jersey, David plays with a seven-piece rock/blues/soul band in his spare time, listens to a lot of Tom Waits and enjoys sleeping late.  He’s also worked as a reporter for Dow Jones Telerate and as Head Engineer for Ocean Recording Studios in New Jersey.  He is a graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and the owner of what is EASILY the messiest desk at WAMU.

Got a question about Sunday Night Session or a suggestion for an upcoming show?  E-mail David at .

The KrayolasThe San Antonio-based band The Krayolas toured the state in the 1970s and 1980s, recording a string of regional hits in the process. But after a time, the band dissolved, and the various members moved on to other projects. Now, with the help of Texas Music legend Augie Myers, after a 20-year hiatus, The Krayolas are back with a new album, Long Leaf Pine (No Smack Gum).

Texas Public Radio’s Nathan Cone brought the band into our studios recently to play some tunes, and talk about how the effort to preserve their recorded past brought them back to the present.

Sometimes, songwriting talent runs in the family.  Case in point – the Earle clan.

Running down the family tree... there’s Texas music icon Steve Earle.  Then there's his talented sister Stacey Earle… AND his son, Justin Townes Earle, who released an impressive new CD called "Midnight At The Movies."  Justin’s middle name comes courtesy of Townes Van Zandt.  And daddy STEVE Earle just released a collection of TVZ covers - a new album simply titled “Townes.”  Confused?   Hopefully it will all make sense by the end of the hour.

Townes Van Zandt - Pancho and Lefty (Rear View Mirror)
Steve Earle - Colorado Girl (Townes)
Justin Townes Earle - Mama's Eyes (Midnight at the Movies)
Stacey Earle - Is It Enough (Dancin' With Them That Brung Me)

Steve Earle - Where I Lead Me (Townes - deluxe edition)
Lyle Lovett - If I Needed You (Step Inside This House)
Townes Van Zandt - For The Sake of the Song (Townes Van Zandt)

The San Antonio band Girl in a Coma is releasing their second album on Blackheart Records on June 2.  Trio B.C. is chock full of the punk sounds they’re known for, along with such disparate influences as 1950s and 1960s girl groups, 1980s New Wave, and the influence of band favorite, Morrissey.  They stopped by the TPR studios this week for an interview and performance.  The band’s San Antonio release show is May 29 at Jack’s Patio.
