The Texas Reading Initiative Unit, in the Division of Curriculum coordinates and supervises the implementation of the early reading instruments and accelerated (intensive) reading instruction for students in Grades K-2 as required by TEC §28.006. The Initiative Unit collaborates with stakeholders to ensure that accelerated instruction and other means of support are provided to students in grade levels impacted by the grade advancement requirements of the Student Success Initiative. Additionally, staff in the Initiative Unit disseminates information about resources that support scientifically based reading research such as the Online Texas Teacher Reading Academies for Grades K-4; Beginning Reading Instruction: Practical Ideas for Parents; and Beginning Reading Instruction: Components of a Research Based Reading Program.
