2009-2010 CONCERT SEASON

____________________________________________________________________________

The Big Spring Symphony Association is pleased to announce the opening concert of the 2009-2010 concert season entitled ‘Moving On’ (or is that Moving Around?) The four concert series promises to include something for everyone, from classic favorites and seasonal music to 70’s – 80’s popular music. Due to the temporary closure of the beautiful Big Spring Municipal Auditorium, the Big Spring Symphony will ‘Move Around’ our city and take advantage of several other excellent performance venues for this concert season.

The first concert of the series,
“Classical Music in the Movies,” will be presented by the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. in the Big Spring High School Auditorium. According to music director and conductor Dr. Keith Graumann, “We have invited long time friend of the Big Spring Symphony Maestro John Giordano to again conduct the opening concert of the season. He will conduct the orchestra in works that were exciting, emotional or spectacular enough to be chosen by movie producers to use in major films.” The concert will begin with the Overture to the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart (Shawshank Redemption, Trading Places, Shelton Key). Other works to be performed on the first portion of the concert include Night on Bare Mountain by Mussorgsky (Natural Born Killers), Clair de Lune by Debussy (Ocean’s Eleven) and Finlandia by Sibelius (Die Hard II).
The second half of the concert will open with Prelude to the Walkurie by Wagner (Apocalypse Now). The audience will also enjoy Barber of Seville Overture by Rossini (Bugs Bunny, Robots), Blue Danube by Strauss (Titanic, 2001 a Space Odyssey, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and Jupiter from the Planets by Holst (Annie Hall).
Graumann continued, “This will be a great opening concert for the Big Spring Symphony. Listeners will recognize many of the pieces played as movie themes, not realizing that the music had been drawn from major orchestral works. And, for non movie-goers, the evening offers a rich variety of more familiar and not so familiar major works.”

The second concert of the series is “A Symphonic Christmas” on December 19, 2009 at 8:00 p.m., and finds the orchestra ‘Moving Around’ to the new Trinity Baptist Church Sanctuary. The Coahoma Choir Kids will be special guests, directed by Sandra Wallace.

“Symphony in Motion,” on February 20, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. is the third concert of the Big Spring Symphony series, and ‘moves’ back to the Big Spring High School Auditorium. Featured soloists will be Big Spring Symphony Members Michael Santorelli, Trumpetist, and Sarah Wilson, cellist.

The celebrated entertainer and song writer Paul Williams will join the Big Spring Symphony in a “Symphony Pops Extravaganza” in the fourth and final concert of the 2009-2010 concert season on March 27, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. Music lovers and musicians alike will ‘Move On’ to the Howard College Coliseum for this special event to culminate the season. Mr. Williams is the composer of such lasting hits as “Rainy Days and Mondays” and “We’ve Only Just Begun” made famous by the Carpenters, “Just an Old Fashioned Love Song” performed by Three Dog Night, and “Evergreen” sung by Barbra Streisand. In addition to being an Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe winning 'Hall of Fame' songwriter, Paul is President and Chairman of ASCAP. Paul recently received an Emmy nomination for "A Muppets Christmas: Letters To Santa" (not to be confused with "A Muppets Christmas Carol" which Paul also worked on).

Along with the opening concert, the Big Spring Symphony Association and Symphony Guild are hosting a season kick-off dinner on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the Big Spring Country Club, beginning at 6:00 p.m. John Giordano will be the guest speaker. Maestro Giordano has had a very colorful and interesting career, working with many of the world’s premier orchestras and artists. The cost of the evening’s meal will be $15.00 payable to the Big Spring Symphony Association. Tea, coffee and water are provided with the meal. Adult beverages are also available. The public is cordially invited to attend. Please RSVP to Suzanne Markwell at 432/268-9335. Season tickets will be offered for sale at the event.
