Professional Licensing and Certification Unit
Continuing Education Requirements

This page contains information on continuing education for all registrations, permits, and licenses issued by the regulatory boards and programs of the Professional Licensing and Certification Unit which may be renewed through Texas Online. Each section also contains a link to the text of relevant board or program rules on the State of Texas web site.

Social Worker
All licensees must complete 15 hours (1.5 continuing education units or CEUs) annually in order to renew the license. All licensees must complete a minimum of three hours of professional standards of practice, values and ethics training each year as part of the required 1.5 CEUs. (22 Texas Administrative Code §781.508)

Professional Counselor
A licensee must complete 12 clock-hours of continuing education acceptable to the board during each 12 month period. Every other year, a licensee must complete at least three hours of continuing education directly related to counselor ethics issues. (22 Texas Administrative Code §681.141)

Athletic Trainer
A licensee must complete 30 clock-hours of continuing education during each three-year period, including successful completion of a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques course. (25 Texas Administrative Code §313.12)

Dietitian
Proof of having earned a minimum of six clock hours of continuing education credit shall be required at the time of renewal. The hours must have been completed within 12 months prior to the date of license expiration and must be offered or approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration or its agents or a regionally accredited college or university. (22 Texas Administrative Code §711.17)

Perfusionist
The continuing education required to maintain current certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) meets licensing requirements. Licensed perfusionists who are not certified by the ABCP should consult the rules of the board at 22 Texas Administrative Code §761.13

Marriage and Family Therapist
A licensee must complete 15 clock hours of continuing education acceptable to the board each year. A three-hour ethics course will be required each year. (22 Texas Administrative Code §801.263)

Sex Offender Treatment Provider
All renewal applicants must submit by the end of every fiscal year, a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education documentation in sex offender treatment of which 3 hours may be in sexual assault victim related training. (22 Texas Administrative Code §810.4)

Fitter and Dispenser of Hearing Instruments
The committee shall require that a licensed fitter and dispenser complete 20 contact hours of continuing education each year. No more than 5 contact hours may be obtained from a course sponsored by a manufacturer. (22 Texas Administrative Code §141.14)

Medical Physicist
A licensee must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education acceptable to the board within a 24-month period. (22 Texas Administrative Code §601.20)

Speech-Language Pathologist and Audiologist
Ten clock hours (one CEU) shall be required for yearly renewal. The holder of dual licenses, meaning both a speech-language pathology license and an audiology license, shall be required to earn 15 (1.5 CEUs) clock hours annually. Initial licensees must complete prorated continuing education as described in the board rules. (22 Texas Administrative Code §741.162)

Orthotist and Prosthetist
Attendance and completion of the following number of continuing education credits are required:
(a) prosthetist or orthotist license - 24
(b) prosthetist and orthotist license 40
(c) prosthetist or orthotist assistant - 12
(d) prosthetist and orthotist assistant - 20
(e) prosthetic or orthotic technician - 6
(f) prosthetic and orthotic technician - 10.

Massage Therapist
Each registered massage therapist must report completion of at least 6 hours of acceptable continuing education accumulated during each annual renewal period. (25 Texas Administrative Code §141.20)

Respiratory Care Practitioner
A practitioner must complete 12 hours of continuing education acceptable to the department during each renewal period. (25 Texas Administrative Code §123.10)

Medical Radiologic Technologist
An MRT must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education acceptable to the department during each biennial renewal period. An LMRT must complete 12 contact hours of continuing education acceptable to the department during each biennial renewal period. The continuing education activities must be general radiation health and safety topics or related to the categories of limited certificate held. (25 Texas Administrative Code §143.11)

Optician
Proof of having earned five contact hours of continuing education credit in each area for which the registrant is renewing shall be required at the time of renewal for each registration. The hours must be offered or approved by the American Board of Opticianry (for spectacle registrations) or the National Contact Lens Examiners (for contact lens registrations.) (25 Texas Administrative Code §129.9)

Contact Lens Dispenser
Continuing education is not required to renew a contact lens dispensing permit.

Code Enforcement Officer
Each Code Enforcement Officer or Code Enforcement Officer in Training must complete 6 contact hours per year, including at least one hour in legal/legislative updates. (25 Texas Administrative Code §130.20)

Sanitarian
Each registered sanitarian must obtain and show proof of not less than 12 continuing education contact hours related to the fields of consumer health, environmental health, or sanitation within the 12 months preceding renewal of their registration. (25 Texas Administrative Code §265.147)

Midwife
A midwife's application for redocumentation must include proof of completion of at least ten contact hours of approved continuing midwifery education since March 1 of the previous year. A current CPR card and current Neonatal Resuscitation card are also required. (22 Texas Administrative Code §831.11)

Personal Emergency Response System Provider
Continuing education is not required in order to renew a license or registration as a Personal Emergency Response System Provider.
