ERS - Employee Retirement System
How to Apply

How to Apply for Employment with ERS

Thank you for your interest in employment with the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS). To be considered by ERS as an applicant you must follow the agency standard procedures outlined below for submitting an application for a posted position. ERS will not consider you as an applicant if you mail or email us a resume or letter of interest without a State of Texas application and the ERS Qualifications Form. To apply for employment with ERS, you must submit a State of Texas Application for Employment, version September 2009, for each position in which you are interested. Beginning September 1, 2009, we will only accept the application stamped with "0909" on the left hand footer.

A photocopy of a completed application form is acceptable. Applications are accepted only for posted positions. Carefully read and follow the instructions on the application form and Job Vacancy Notice. You must meet the minimum qualifications listed on the Job Vacancy Notice to be considered for a position.

You must submit the ERS Qualifications Form with your application. The purpose of the form is for you to specify how you meet each of the minimum and preferred qualifications listed in the Job Vacancy Notice. Applications submitted without the ERS Qualifications Form will be considered incomplete and not screened for an interview.

The Employees Retirement System of Texas is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate based on race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin, or disability.

Resumes. You may attach a resume as supplementary information. However, do not write "see resume" in the "Summary of Experience" box on the application form. Doing so will invalidate your application. Please do not include photographs or information pertaining to marital status, children, race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age or disability.

Additional Information/Attachments. The Job Vacancy Notice will include instructions about additional information that may be required to be submitted with your application. Failure to submit the required attachments with your application will invalidate your application.

  • Typing and/or Data Entry Tests. All typing/data entry tests will be administered by the ERS Human Resources office. These tests will be given only to the applicants selected for interview for positions requiring a minimum typing/data entry speed.
  • College Transcripts. If you are using college credit to meet either a minimum or a preferred qualification, a photocopy of your official college transcript(s) is required. The instructions in the Job Vacancy Notice will state whether you must submit transcripts at the time you submit your application or whether you may bring them with you to your interview, if selected.

Closing Date. Your application and all required attachments must be received by ERS by 5:00 p.m. CST on the closing date indicated on the Job Vacancy Notice (i.e., delivered to the Human Resources Office, faxed, or date-stamped by the ERS mailroom). If the position is posted as "open until filled" it is recommended that you submit your application to Human Resources as soon as possible.

Checking Status. If you put a current email address on your application, you will receive an email from the Human Resources Office when we have received your application and entered it into our database.

You are welcome to email the Human Resources Office (Employment@ers.state.tx.us) at any time for information on the status of the selection process. Only applicants who are interviewed will be notified when a vacancy is filled.

Criminal History Checks. The ERS will conduct criminal history checks through the Texas Department of Public Safety on primary and secondary candidates for a position. In some cases the agency will conduct fingerprint checks through the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Selective Service Registration. If you are a male 18 to 25 years of age, an offer of employment is contingent upon you presenting proof when you report for your first day of employment that you are registered with the selective service system or that you are exempt from registration. Online registration and proof of registration is available on the Selective Service System's website.

Veteran's Preference. The Employees Retirement System adheres to the Texas Veteran's Preference Act.

Please contact the Human Resources Office at Employment@ers.state.tx.us if you have further questions about ERS application procedures or if we may be of further assistance.
