Renewable Energy
In 1999, the Texas Legislature passed a bill that required power companies to build 2,000 megawatts of new renewable energy capacity by 2009. As of October 1, 2002, approximately half of the required capacity had been installed, well ahead of expectations.
Texas currently leads the nation in renewable resources and is ranked first in production of wind power. It is also a leader in solar power and biomass energy, and has many other resources like geothermal energy, passive solar building and solar cooking capabilities. With the start of retail electric competition in 2002, most Texans now are able to choose an electric provider based on how the electricity is generated among other options.
