Cemetery Associations

Preserving a historic cemetery involves careful planning to provide for its ongoing care. One item to consider is how to create a cemetery preservation and maintenance organization. Although one individual takes the lead, long-term preservation usually requires involvement of an organization, such as a local cemetery association, family cemetery association or a nonprofit "friends of the cemetery" organization, if a local government owns the site.

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) distributes materials on setting up a cemetery association, prepared by B.F. Hicks, an attorney in Mount Vernon, Texas. We thank him for making these publications available to the preservation community.
