Officials Looking for Stolen Truck Containing Radioactive Device
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is trying to find a truck that was stolen Wednesday morning from outside a Texaco service station in Garland. The truck contains a potentially dangerous radioactive device.The truck is a white 2001 Ford F-350 pick-up that has a camper top with the words Bonded Inspections Incorporated on the side. An industrial radiography camera was among other equipment located inside the camper of the truck.
The camera, used to X-ray pipelines, contains a small radioactive capsule encased in a protective shielding. A person handling the camera could be at risk of radiation exposure if the shielding is damaged or the capsule is exposed. The camera weighs approximately 50 pounds and is about the size of a large shoebox.
DSHS officials said anyone who has any information about this truck should call their local police or sheriff’s department or DSHS at (512) 834-6770 ext. 2015 or (512) 458-7460.
The truck is owned by Bonded Inspections, an industrial radiography company located in Garland. The company is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the truck and camera.
The Texaco station where the theft occurred is at 1935 Jupiter St. The truck’s Texas license plate number is 5YL T51.
