Rules and procedures concerning innovative courses have changed! Please read the following information regarding the use of innovative courses carefully.

The State Board of Education (SBOE) may approve any course that does not fall within any of the subject areas listed in the foundation and enrichment curricula, and the commissioner of education may approve a discipline-based course in the foundation or enrichment curriculum when the applying school district or organization demonstrates that the proposed course is academically challenging and addresses documented student needs.

2008-2009 Approved Innovative Courses

The courses listed at the link above have been approved by either the SBOE or the Commissioner of Education. With the approval of the local board of trustees, a school district may offer, without modifications, any state-approved innovative course (TAC §74.27). You may request course descriptions and requirements for each course from the contact information associated with it. No application is required for a district to offer one of these courses.

Innovative Course Application and Instructions

A school district may develop additional innovative courses to enable students to master knowledge, skills, and competencies in courses for which there are no essential knowledge and skills. Before you decide to apply for new innovative course approval, please review the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to be sure that an innovative course is needed. You may find that one of the TEKS courses will meet your needs.

Innovative Courses Expiring in 2008-2009

Some innovative course approvals have expiration dates. If your district offers a course that was approved prior to 2006-2007, then it is likely to expire soon. The link above will show a list of the innovative course approvals that are expiring in 2008-2009 and what action is required for the district to continue offering the course in 2010-2011 and beyond.

NEW! Innovative Course PEIMS Codes to be Eliminated

Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS) codes assigned to innovative courses that have already expired or that are allowed to expire this school year (08-09) will be eliminated in June of 2009. Beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, districts will no longer have access to these codes unless a new application is submitted and approved.
