ISSUES
Cutting Taxes and Limiting Government Growth
“By keeping taxes low and holding down spending, we've erased a $10 billion deficit and fostered an economic environment that's helped Texas businesses create one million new jobs since 2003.”
- Lt. Governor David Dewhurst
Legislative Accomplishments:
  • Balanced four state budgets without raising taxes and erased a $10 billion deficit
  • Passed the largest tax cut in Texas history, a $14.2 billion reduction in local school property taxes in 2008-09
  • Saved $9 billion and protected the state's Rainy Day Fund to keep the state budget balanced in the future
Priorities for the Future:
  • Work to ensure that property tax appraisals are uniform and fair
  • Continue holding state spending to less than the rate of inflation plus population growth to keep government accountable to taxpayers
  • Continue local school property tax relief in the future to ensure that tax relief approved in 2007 is both significant and long-lasting
