ASSISTANT COMMANDER, GAME WARDEN

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs wildlife and natural resource enforcement work.  Work involves supervising and overseeing law enforcement staff and programs; conducting analyses of law enforcement programs and activities; and conducting emergency management and homeland security operations.  Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of others.  Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Oversees and administers statewide law enforcement programs including emergency management and homeland security operations.

Conducts analyses of law enforcement programs.

Conducts and oversees training activities at the Game Warden Training Academy.

Conducts investigations concerning complaints from the public and special criminal investigations.

Coordinates with federal agencies and other state agencies on joint enforcement programs.

Develops and conducts in-service training for staff.

Prepares and monitors the annual operating budget.

Provides current and accurate information regarding statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Provides information concerning law enforcement activities to the public, elected officials, and governmental agencies.

Reviews reports and paperwork for accuracy and completeness.

Serves as an instructor in law enforcement programs.

Plans, assigns, and supervises the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

Experience and Education

Graduation from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Training Academy and eight years of satisfactory service as a Game Warden.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in criminal justice, corrections, criminology, police science, natural resources, or a related field is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to interpret and apply state and federal statutes and regulations pertaining to wildlife, natural resource, and water safety enforcement; to interpret and apply applicable provisions of the Texas Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedures; to develop and conduct training programs; to interpret and apply agency procedures and policies; to prepare reports; to communicate effectively; and to plan, assign, and supervise the work of others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Must be licensed as a Texas peace officer through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.  Must possess a valid driver's license.
