AIR CONDITIONING AND BOILER OPERATOR II

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs routine (journey-level) work in the operation and maintenance of turbines, compressors, and auxiliary equipment. Work involves operating steam boilers, turbines, and compressors and performing repairs on boilers, compressors, and auxiliary equipment. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Maintains water levels in boilers; operates turbines, compressors, fans, pumps, and auxiliary equipment; takes readings and maintains a log sheet of boiler, turbine, and compressor operations; and switches chillers as needed to cover load requirements.

Monitors turbines, motors, and pumps.

Monitors boiler water and adds chemicals as required.

Inspects pumps, turbines, compressors, boilers, and other plant equipment.

Makes minor repairs of boilers, turbines, compressors, and auxiliary equipment.

Cleans boilers, inserts new tubes in boilers, fits pipes, and repacks valves.

Cleans and sandblasts turbine blades.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in the operation and maintenance of steam-generating and refrigeration equipment. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of pressure steam boiler operations; of the functions and mechanics of stationary plant equipment such as turbines, compressors, pumps, and motors; and of the fundamental principles of electricity.

Skill in the use of tools.

Ability to operate plant equipment, to detect defects or malfunctions in equipment while in operation, to understand and follow instructions, to determine and take proper action quickly in emergencies, and to make mechanical repairs.
