FINGERPRINT TECHNICIAN III

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs highly complex (senior-level) fingerprint identification and classification work.  Work involves evaluating, classifying, searching for, and identifying fingerprints and analyzing illegible fingerprint cases.  May supervise the work of others.  Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Evaluates and analyzes fingerprints for quality assurance and assigns fingerprint pattern types for entry into the automated fingerprint identification system.

Classifies and searches fingerprint cards by visual examination or electronically for fingerprint patterns.

Classifies and identifies illegible prints.

Edits fingerprint characteristics by identifying or accurately adjusting the axes and cores of prints and editing fingerprint minutia.

Converts and enters existing records and fingerprint cards into the automated fingerprint identification system.

Interprets fingerprint patterns to determine if they are unclassifiable or otherwise unacceptable for comparison, and returns to contributor.

Coordinates activities and disseminates information to authorized personnel requesting information.

Trains or assists in training staff in the use of automated fingerprint workstations and equipment.

Assists in providing training in fingerprint methods.

Assists the general public in reviewing criminal history records.

May supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in fingerprint identification and classification work.  Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred.  Education and experience may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of methodologies and techniques used in fingerprint identification, of fingerprint pattern types, and of criminal records systems.

Skill in computer and equipment operations; and in recognizing, classifying, and comparing patterns.

Ability to verify fingerprint classifications and to supervise the work of others.
