RISK MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs routine (journey-level) work in the development and implementation of risk management loss control programs.  Work involves reviewing, evaluating, inspecting, and developing agency risk management programs and conducting reviews and examinations of a broad range of loss, liability, or risk exposures.  Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Develops and implements risk management loss control programs and guidelines.

Reviews files, reports, and programs for compliance with applicable state and federal laws related to risk management and loss control programs.

Conducts risk management program reviews and safety program evaluations; conducts presentations on risk management programs.

Conducts on-site inspections of properties and facilities to identify hazards and risk exposures.

Consults with other risk management representatives to identify loss exposures.

Prepares technical and comprehensive reports, plans, and procedures for developing risk management programs, reviews, and inspections.

Assists in accomplishing loss avoidance, loss prevention, reduction, retention, transfer, and control assessment for risk management programs.

Assists in the review of accident, damage, or loss claims notification procedures; claims investigation and analysis procedures; loss control procedures; and risk financing procedures.

Assists in the review of loss and exposure data.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in risk management, loss control, or workers' compensation and safety program work.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in business management, public administration, risk management, insurance, occupational safety, or a related field is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of loss control management, of training and presentation techniques, of workers' compensation and safety program management, and of risk management concepts and techniques.

Ability to analyze plans and programs; to analyze risk management and loss control material; to analyze agency policies and programs for compliance with applicable state and federal statutes, standards, rules, and professional risk management guidelines; to coordinate risk management, loss control, and safety programs; and to communicate effectively.

Registration, Certification, and Licensure

May be required to possess a certification in loss control management, risk management, insurance, or safety management.
