NATURAL RESOURCES SPECIALIST I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs entry-level to routine (journey-level) natural resources work.  Work involves conducting natural resources surveys, investigative research, studies, and inspections; conducting field or laboratory tests; and analyzing and evaluating results with regard to the impact on natural resources.    Works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Collects and analyzes natural resources, environmental, or botanical samples; chemicals; toxic dust; or contaminates.

Conducts inspections, surveys, and studies; evaluates results with regard to their impact on natural resources; prepares technical reports and recommendations regarding findings; and conducts follow-up inspections as required.

Evaluates compliance requests and develops strategies for remedies.

Maintains, calibrates, and operates technical equipment.

Prepares technical papers, permits, publications, and reports.

Prepares, assembles, and distributes educational materials and conducts educational presentations and training programs.

Provides technical assistance related to natural resources work being performed.

Researches and reviews natural resources documentation.

Assists in field studies and in making technical evaluations.

May assist in evaluating programs and techniques.

May prepare and file legal action and testify as an expert witness in legal proceedings.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in environmental quality, natural resources, botany, or agronomy work.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in natural science or a related field is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal ordinances and laws; of environmental or chemical engineering; of chemical and biological analysis techniques and procedures; of radiological safety practices and techniques; of botany, ecology, taxonomy, and hydrology; and of the operation of municipal, agricultural, and industrial water treatment plants.

Skill in the operation and maintenance of laboratory and environmental and computer equipment and applications.

Ability to provide expert testimony; to conduct inspections, surveys, investigative research, and studies; to analyze environmental and natural resource samples; to prepare reports; and to communicate effectively.
