GRAPHIC DESIGNER II

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs highly complex (senior-level) graphics design and consultation work. Work involves assigning and assisting the graphics staff in conceiving and executing graphics design projects and designing, laying out, illustrating, and producing graphics communications materials using computer hardware and software and traditional graphics methods. May supervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Oversees and/or participates in the planning, development, and production of graphics materials.

Designs and/or produces graphic materials using computer-based and traditional methods.

Reviews and approves final graphics production.

Researches, plans, and implements new operating and production methods.

Prepares operating and production procedures and reports.

Serves as a liaison with printers, contractors, and suppliers on media projects and the procurement of materials and supplies.

Troubleshoots system hardware and software problems.

Maintains electronic graphics design system components such as laser printers, scanners, disk drives, and modems.

Maintains traditional graphics equipment such as reproduction cameras and copiers.

Makes presentations to staff or the public on the development of agency graphics materials.

May supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in graphic arts production. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in fine arts, graphics design, or a related field is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of computer-based design workstations and their design capabilities; of traditional graphics production methods, techniques, and equipment; of design principles; and of printing processes.

Skill in the operation of graphics design equipment; and in the use of various graphics design software packages.

Ability to communicate effectively; to plan the preparation of graphics design projects; to design and produce graphics materials; and to supervise the work of others.
