LAND SURVEYOR II

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs complex (journey-level) surveying work.  Work involves planning and conducting field surveys; conducting inspections; taking field measurements; and compiling, updating, and maintaining maps.  May train others.  Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Conducts and certifies fields surveys, verifies survey accuracy, composes field notes, and prepares survey reports

Collects field survey data and plots survey lines using various instruments, hand-held calculators, computers, and global positioning system (GPS) equipment.

Interprets maps, construction drawings, and legal land documents to accurately perform various types of surveys.

Compiles and maintains sketches from maps, reports, plots, deed records, field notes, and other documents related to surveys.

Calculates and verifies data such as heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain.

Prepares descriptions of property boundary surveys for use in deeds, leases, or other legal documents.

Researches legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain information about property boundaries in areas to be surveyed.

Organizes technical data, analyzes findings, and makes recommendations as appropriate.

May assist with negotiations or providing advice on complex surveying projects and contracts.

May serve as an advisor to executive staff, management, and the public on land or engineering surveying matters.

May train others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in land surveying work.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in land surveying, geomatics, or civil engineering is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of professional surveying principles, techniques, and procedures; of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; and of aerial photography.

Skill in the use of surveying instruments and drafting tools and equipment.

Ability to conduct field surveys; to design, research, and analyze mapping systems; to compile ink maps and working sketches; and to train others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Must be registered as a professional surveyor by the Texas Board of Land Surveying.  May require licensure as a state land surveyor by the Texas Board of Land Surveying.
