PRINTING SERVICES TECHNICIAN II

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) printing and bindery work.  Work involves reducing or enlarging materials, registering multiple images, and operating and maintaining reproduction and bindery equipment.  May train others.  Works under general supervision, with moderate discretion for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Sets up, programs, and operates reproduction or bindery equipment.

Selects methods and procedures for handling job orders.

Determines job layouts.

Designs and produces graphic layouts and camera-ready artwork for reproduction of documents.

Performs quality control and examines products for defects.

Produces negatives from electronic or magnetic data media.

Edits images and documents.

Troubleshoots equipment problems and starts corrective action.

Maintains records and ensures that inventories of materials and supplies are correct.

Mixes inks to obtain requested color.

May estimate, review, and bill printing requests.

May coordinate shipping of finished jobs.

May train others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in operating bindery or reproduction equipment work.  Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the types, varieties, and uses of papers, inks, chemicals, developers, and fixers used in the operation of duplicating and reproduction equipment; of the operation and maintenance of bindery equipment; and of computer operations and communications networks.

Skill in the operation of bindery, duplicating, or reproduction equipment.

Ability to adjust equipment for specific operations, to perform maintenance on equipment, to communicate effectively, and to train others.
