Caring for the Coast

No matter where you live in Texas, the state's Gulf Coast affects your life. Coastal industries, tourism and fisheries generate billions of dollars for the state, with most of Texas' gulf beaches accessible to the public. The task of protecting these environmental and economic assets is the mission of the Texas General Land Office (GLO) Coastal Resources Program.

Jerry Patterson, Texas Land CommissionerWith 367 miles fronting on the Gulf of Mexico, and more than 3,300 miles of bay shores, Texas has one of the longest coastlines along with one of the highest erosion rates in the nation. In this environment, diverse wildlife thrives alongside bustling ports and a growing petrochemical industry. The GLO Coastal Resources Program is proud to serve as steward of this vital and fragile region.

The dedicated staff of Coastal Resources ensures beach access for all Texans, works to fight coastal erosion, maps our coastal zone with the latest technology, and administers millions of dollars in coastal grants every year. Projects funded by these grants enhance our natural resources, provide better access to the public, and support economic development. The Texas Coastal Management Program, housed at the GLO, is unlike any other in the nation and is setting the standard for how state agencies work together managing coastal areas.

The magnitude of the services provided by our Coastal Resources staff is impressive. I hope you'll take a moment to learn about these exceptional individuals and the work we do to protect our coast for the enjoyment of all Texans.
