Created by the 78th Texas Legislature, the Health and Human Services Commission's Office of Inspector General works to prevent and reduce waste, abuse and fraud within the Texas health and human services system.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) aggressively strives to initiate proactive methods to support and enhance the overall health and human services system mission. The OIG works closely with all health and human services agencies and programs, and coordinates with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

The Vision:

The Office of Inspector General is the nationally recognized model for leveraging technology and collaborative partnerships to eliminate waste, abuse, and fraud. The value the OIG provides is to ensure that the health, safety, and welfare of all Texans are universally realized.

Mission Statement:

We protect the integrity and ensure accountability in the health and human services programs, as well as the health and welfare of the recipients of those programs, by identifying, communicating and correcting activities of waste, fraud or abuse in Texas.

In performing its mission, the office is required to set clear objectives, priorities, and performance standards, including:

• Coordinating investigative efforts to aggressively recover Medicaid overpayments
• Allocating resources to cases that have the strongest supportive evidence and the greatest potential for recovery of money
• Maximizing the opportunities for referral of cases to the Office of the Attorney General
