New Procedures for Certification Test Approval  (09/01/06)

Effective September 1, 2006, educators/certification candidates may register for a state certification exam (TExES, ExCET, TOPT, TxMaT or TASC/TASC-ASL) if one of the following criteria is met:

  • Educator Preparation Program Candidate – Candidates that are fulfilling the requirements in an SBEC-approved Texas educator preparation must receive prior approval to register for an examination. After acceptance in an educator preparation program, candidates will acquire a unique TEA Test ID number (not your social security number) by creating an online account and setting up an educator profile on the SBEC Web site at www.sbec.state.tx.us or by logging on to an existing account to obtain the TEA Test ID number. Then the candidate may go to www.texes.ets.org to register for only those exams approved by the program. Programs will no longer issue bar codes for approval to test.
  • Out-of State/Country Certified or Temporary Teacher Certificate Candidates - If you are certified in another state/country or have applied for the Temporary Teacher Certificate, you must apply online at www.sbec.state.tx.us for a review of your credentials/transcripts before you may register for an examination.  TEA Credentialing Services will approve the appropriate examinations as part of a review of your credentials.  After you have received the results of your credential review, you will be able to register for the examinations listed on your certification plan.
  • Certification by Examination – An educator who holds a bachelor’s degree and appropriate Texas classroom teaching certificate may add classroom certification areas by successfully completing the appropriate content examination for the area(s) sought. You will need to create an online account or log on to your existing account and go to your Educator Profile at www.sbec.state.tx.us to receive your unique TEA Test ID number, which will be used to register for an exam at www.texes.ets.org.
  • Charter School Teachers – To fulfill the No Child Left Behind federal requirement to be highly qualified, charter school teachers must demonstrate content mastery in their assignment. To register for a content certification exam to meet this requirement, go to www.texes.ets.org. Please note that passing a TExES/ExCET test does not qualify charter school teachers for a Texas educator certificate.
