About the Directorate

Working closely with NSF, UCAR, NCAR's Advisory Council, Staff and the university community, the NCAR Directorate sets the strategy that directs this vital scientific organization, whose research, facilities, and technology advance the understanding of our earth system, and promote both economic and human well-being.

Organizations within the NCAR Director's Office

The NCAR Director and NCAR Deputy Director and Executive Support Teams are responsible for NCAR leadership and direct executive-level administrative support and scheduling. 

The NCAR  Advanced Study Program (ASP) promotes NCAR by encouraging the development of young scientists in the field of atmospheric science. ASP coordinates the ASP Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, ASP Summer Colloquium and Faculty and Graduate Student Visitor Programs.

The NCAR Budget & Planning Office is responsible for developing and reporting on the NCAR NSF Base Funds annual budget, NCAR Indirect budget planning and supporting labs and programs in the administration of policies, procedures and guidelines for submitting NCAR Non-NSF and NSF Special fund proposals.

The Diversity, Education and Outreach (DEO) Team works with laboratory and program partners to coordinate, evaluate and support NCAR education programs and outreach efforts.  In partnership with Human Resources, DEO leads diversity initiatives, supports the UCAR/NCAR Equity and Inclusion (UNEION) training program and sponsors community-building across NCAR.

The NCAR Library serves and supports Atmospheric, Solar and Earth scientists and their research at NCAR and throughout the broader UCAR community .The Library also manages OpenSky, the repository of NCAR/UCAR research and history.

NCAR Operations Team is responsible for NCAR- level operations, policy/procedures, NCAR change management coordination, NCAR scientific and research engineering appointments and web development and software engineering in support of the NCAR main web pages and administration tools.

Director's Office Initiatives

The Data Stewardship Engineering Team (DSET) is responsible for enhanced, comprehensive digital data discovery and access.

The Data Assimilation Program (DA) facilitates data assimilation work through development of common tools and infrastructure, training of postdoctoral scientists and mutual coordination of NCAR data-assimilation activities.
