2009 Barnard Environmental Lecture: Climate Change Science and the Utility of Assessments

The 2009 Robert C. Barnard Environmental Lecture will be given by James J. McCarthy, chair of the AAAS Board of Directors, on Thursday 1 October at 6:30 p.m. in the AAAS Auditorium, Washington, D.C.

McCarthy, Alexander Agassiz Professor of Biological Oceanography at Harvard University, will talk about the evolution of climate science, assessments of this knowledge, and how these have informed climate change policy. Lessons will be drawn from the evolving series of reports including the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, certain other regional assessments, and the recently released U.S. Global Change Research Program state of knowledge report on Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States.

The Robert C. Barnard Environmental Lecture provides an annual forum for an outstanding speaker to address current environmental issues. The lecture is held each fall during the orientation program for the incoming class of AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellows, in recognition of Mr. Barnard's many years of service as a member of the selection committee for the fellowships.

The Rise of Technological Medicine

The AAAS Archives and the Chemical Heritage Foundation's Center for Contemporary History and Policy will sponsor a lecture on the rise of technological medicine on Wednesday 7 October from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the Revelle Conference Room of AAAS Headquarters, 12th and H Streets, NW.

Stanley Joel Reiser, M.D., clinical professor of health care sciences and of health policy at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, will speak on technological innovation in medicine and its implications for patients, doctors, and policy officials drafting health care reform.

2009 Annual Meeting of the Caribbean Division: "Astronomy and the Origin of Life"

The Caribbean regional division of AAAS will hold its 24th Annual Meeting themed "Astronomy and the Origin of Life" on 24 October in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the Puerto Rico Convention Center.

Held jointly with the 61st Southeastern Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society, the conference will celebrate the International Year of Astronomy, the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book On the Origin of Species.

Personalized Medicine in an Era of Health Care Reform

The AAAS Scientific Freedom, Responsibility and Law Program, in partnership with the Food and Drug Law Institute, will convene a two-day colloquium on personalized medicine 26-27 October at AAAS headquarters, 12th and H Streets, NW, Washington, D.C.

The colloquium will address the scientific discoveries, business models, and regulatory changes that are necessary to develop new personalized treatments and their companion diagnostics. Sessions will focus on electronic health records, reimbursement, education of patients and their caregivers, and ethical, legal, and policy issues such as privacy and patients' responsibilities for their own health, among others.

2010 AAAS Annual Meeting: "Bridging Science and Society"

The 2010 AAAS Annual Meeting will be held in San Diego, California, bringing together an exceptional array of speakers addressing some of the most crucial and timely areas of science, technology, engineering, education, and policy-making.

Titled "Bridging Science and Society," the meeting is a call to for scientists and engineers to make their work both useful and understandable to serve society, and help the public rediscover the excitement and hope that research and its findings offer.
