Nothing cheap about zeal in cheap seats
From a lofty perch in the next- to-last row of the stadium, a Broncos fan just might be closer to heaven than the football field. So maybe it only makes sense that unbridled faith in an NFL team that was hard to love should begin here.

Paige: Give the Glove some love
As the Broncos thrashed about ineffectually in the first half, and Kyle Orton was booed like silent-movie villain Snidely Whiplash, it was thought that Orton might be the sixth-best Broncos quarterback in the stadium.

Armstrong: Broncos 2-0 ... against Ohio
The good news is the Broncos are 2-0. Now for the bad news: There are no more Ohio teams on their schedule.

Krieger: Doom's sacks back anew
The best pass rusher in Broncos history was 6-feet-5-inches tall. Simon Fletcher, who recorded 97 1/2 quarterback sacks from 1985-95, was an early prototype for the long, lean, athletic sack artist.

Meyers: Hunting rule No. 1 — Check guide references
Hanging by the neck from a sheet in a Fairplay jail may seem like a harsh comeuppance for conducting a fraudulent outfitting operation.

Bailey couldn't be any humidor hero
Don't forget about Roger Bailey when ranking the best performances by a Rockies pitcher.

Chambers: DU star to return to stellar lineup
NHL-bound defenseman Patrick Wiercioch has again thrilled the Pioneers in the heat of the summer with a simple pledge.

Dater: NHL's best show is in Ariz. court
The most compelling story of the NHL the last few months? To this observer, it hasn't even been close. It has been the drama being played out in a Phoenix courtroom.

Devlin: Journalist's painful labor of love
It could have happened to any one of us, but it happened to Lloyd Engen.

Frei: CSU works to bolster its fort
Unfortunately, this has been overshadowed because of the furor in Boulder. But the program that knocked off the Buffaloes in the Rocky Mountain Showdown now is 3-0.

Henderson: USC didn't get day at beach
Pete Carroll's style of coaching is needed in college football. Diving over the pile himself on goal-line drills. Practice pranks. Open locker room. In a sport that seems too corporate, Southern California players are the only ones who have ever told me they have — gasp! — fun in practice.

Hochman: Don't flip: Clips will be in it
The Nuggets swept the season series with the Clippers a season ago, as did five other teams in the Western Conference. Why? Because the Clippers weren't good at basketball.

Hear that, Broncos fans? The reconstruction of the team's roster has begun, ever so slowly.

Kensler: Stadler wants homecoming
Once those 100-degree days take up residence in the desert, Kevin Stadler's thoughts turn to Denver.

Klis: Muscles may stiffen at 30, but so does resolve
Their muscle soreness deepens. Their bones creak at the joints. The mirror is starting to reveal a silver tint in the morning stubble.

Meisler: Silent spring for local teams
The only weekend void on April's calendar makes the third Saturday a natural for National Spring Game Day. The Final Four and the Masters are done, the NFL draft a week away. NBA and NHL playoffs are just starting.

Meyer: Ritzenhein backbone to U.S. revival
Fans of American distance running had to wait 13 years for an American-born runner to join Bob Kennedy on the list of 5,000-meter runners to break 13 minutes.

Moss: Farm system yields great bumper crop
The Rockies' minor-league system is sizzling.

Renck: NL smells like a tossup
So much has been made about the Rockies' whiffs, you'd think they were a fragrance, not a baseball team.

"Palace in Dallas" great for prime time
Scratch those rumors that NBC initially planned to broadcast Brian Williams' Friday night network newscast from the new $1.15 billion Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Saunders: Time has come for vet Rocks to step up
My neighbor Bruce is a diehard Rockies fan. "I'm worried," he admitted. "Those guys are striking out way too much. They look lost up there."

Willoughby: Return to river grassroots a blessing
At a time when industry pundits are lamenting the demise of the whitewater kayaking industry, the 2009 Gore Canyon Race rediscovered the economics of soul.
