Good news for BYU coach

- Posted to All Things Colorado Sports by Natalie Meisler

BYU’s BCS hopes were dashed by Florida State Saturday but Cougars coach Bronco Mendenhall had some reason smile at his weekly press conference Monday. Cougars men’s basketball coach Dave Rose opened the media session with an announcement that his latest medical scan showed him free of pancreatic cancer. He underwent surgery to remove his spleen this summer and the tumor was completely removed. So typically, Mendenhall had his priorities in order. He opened his comments with how happy he was for his colleague. With that kind of.. Read on …

Live review: Dirty Dozen Brass Band @ the Bluebird Theater

- Posted to Reverb by Jason Blevins

New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band is still exploring its potential in the guitar-driven jam world. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band tickled a busy Bluebird Theater Friday with a surprisingly guitar-heavy show. Of course, the brassmen led the show, with Efrem Towns culling rich sounds from his pocket-sized flugelhorn and band co-founders Roger Lewis and Kevin Harris working in tight cooperation on their baritone and tenor saxes. The band’s other co-founder, Gregory Davis, delivered a trumpet muffled groove reminiscent of Miles Davis “Doo Bop” days. Now in its third decade, the Dirty.. Read on …

The role of civility in society and the political arena

- Posted to eLetters by DP Opinion

Re: “Civility is overrated,” Sept. 18 David Harsanyi column. In his reaction to the incivility displayed in our society recently, David Harsanyi says that’s not a bad thing, especially when it occurs in Congress and is directed at President Obama. Perhaps Harsanyi needs to be reminded that words like “incivility” and “uncivil” have the same root as “civilization.” So to demonstrate incivility is to act in an uncivilized manner. When a large number of people are uncivil for a long period of time, civilization declines. Maybe Harsanyi thinks we ought to go in that direction and then start over after.. Read on …

It's careful time for Broncos

- Posted to All Things Broncos by Jeff Legwold

If memory serves, roughly a year ago, as summer formally gave way to autumn on the calendar, there was a lot of discussion about a 2-0 team with a league-leading offense. The Broncos eventually pushed that to 3-0 to open '08 and led the league in scoring with 80 points in two games, 114 points after three. Some folks were running for the calulator to see where it would all end up and just how much of the record book they would own at that pace over 16 games. They then scored 19 points in Week 4 and didn't top 20 points.. Read on …

Colorado fares better than most

- Posted to Blogged Down by The Economy by Economy

Colorado did a lot better than most states last week when August unemploment numbers showed an uptick in July's dismal 7.6 percent to 7.2 percent. Colorado's jobless rate improved more in one month than it has in 26 years. That's little consolation to the unemployed. Here is a PDF of a 50-state breakdown of unemployment rates. http://epi.3cdn.net/18b2bf64d0f71c0a81_w9m6bhwvi.pdf Jobless pay running out for many Prospects for work remain bleak, even for those left unemployed for a year. Remembering Georgia

- Posted to Seen First by Joanne Davidson

Georgia Imhoff's farmgirl roots laid a solid foundation for the woman she was to become: They gave her strength, both mental and physical, to become one of Denver's most respected philanthropists, one that gave as freely from her heart as she did from her pocketbook. Georgia died at 9:45 a.m. today (Sept. 6). She had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May, but suffered a massive heart attack Aug. 29 while in Silverthorne with Walt, her husband of 36 years. She was airlifted to St. Anthony's Central Hospital, where she remained in cardiac intensive care until being entrusted to hospice care.. Read on …

Foreign Batman

I never thought the old '60s Batman could be campier, but like most things, I was wrong. This clip comes from .. God knows where, but I think they were on to something here. I always thought the Joker should be black instead of ghostly white, and you know what? Throw in a little Spiderman too. (Thanks @MFuller) .. Read on …

Tulowitzki wins Player of Week honors

- Posted to All Things Rockies by Troy Renck

DENVER -- Troy Tulowitzki could have easily won NL Player of the Week a month ago, until San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez went nuclear. This time Tulowitzki smoked the competition, winning the award Monday by going 9-for-23 with four home runs in consecutive games. Tulowitzki is batting .289 with 81 RBIs this season as the Rockies are pushing to make the playoffs. He's attempting to become the first NL shortstop with 25-plus home runs and fielding percentage over .990. "This is when you want to be at your best -- down the stretch,'' Tulowitzki told The Denver Post today. The Rockie' shortstop edged.. Read on …

Ryan O'Reilly signs contract

- Posted to All Things Avs by Adrian Dater

Wow, Avs just signed Ryan O'Reilly to a three-year, $2.7 million contract. Maybe this kid will make the team after all. It's an "entry level" contract, and there still is a chance - maybe a good one - that O'Reilly still will be sent back to junior before either opening night or before he plays 10 NHL games this season. If he goes back to junior, he will not make $900,000 this year, obviously. But if he makes the team, that's his pay, for each of the next three years. I'm sure O'Reily got a bonus as part of.. And these are all eggy. Barb's Squares Serves 4 as a side dish The first time I had this cheesy, eggy bread was at Barb and Mike Heck’s cheesy, hilarious 60s party (they both turned 60). The Hecks grow pinot gris, among other grapes, in Paonia, Colorado which have found their way into quite a few award winning wines. They are the best kind of wine people: wild, fun loving, the antithesis of a snob. Indeed, this recipe calls for Bisquick (but you can.. Read on …
