Tampa Bay Rays bounce back behind David Price, rout Cleveland Indians 8-2

CLEVELAND — This time, David Price was only mad at himself.

The four perfect innings he started with against the hot-hitting Indians and the shutout he took into the eighth hardly seemed to matter as Price stood at his locker after the 8-2 win Wednesday, again disappointed he fell short of a complete game.

Commission chairman calls for review of Riverview community center

TAMPA — The chairman of the Hillsborough County Commission is asking for an investigation of what he called questionable spending for a new suburban community center.

Al Higginbotham wants to know whether county tax money that is supposed to be spent on construction paid for consultants, lawyers and taxes for the Riverview center known as the Regent. He also wants an accounting of why tax money was spent on seeming luxuries, such as statues, a marble facade and wood flooring at the $7 million community center that opened in January.

Florida noise law falls victim to lawyer's crusade

Tampa Bay can now turn the dials up to 11: An appellate court has declared the state statute allowing police to ticket booming car stereos is unconstitutional and violates the First Amendment.

It's another victory for St. Petersburg corporate lawyer Richard Catalano, whose 3 1/2-year fight against the state law prohibiting loud noise started when he got a $73.50 ticket for blasting Justin Timberlake from his white 2003 Infiniti G35.

Hillsborough deputy shoots alligator as it chomps trapper's leg

PALM RIVER — A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy shot an 8-foot alligator that bit the leg of a trapper Wednesday evening.

Someone reported an alligator in the roadway at U.S. 301 S and Palm River Road just after 7:30 p.m., the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Hillsborough student musicians play for a world record

TAMPA — It was nearly 5 p.m. Time to break a world record.

"Follow the bows of the people in front of you," shouted Robert Halczyn, a music teacher at Williams Middle Magnet School, perched atop a ladder. Even using a megaphone, he could barely be heard over the rumble of teenage voices and the tuning of violins, cellos, basses and violas.

Rays to retire St. Petersburg officers' call-signs before Friday's game

ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays will retire three special numbers before Friday night's game against the Orioles: K-2, S-23 and 143-Bravo.

Those are the radio call-signs of the three St. Petersburg police officers who died in the line of duty this year: K-9 Officer Jeffrey A. Yaslowitz (K-2), Sgt. Thomas J. Baitinger (S-23) and Officer David S. Crawford (143-Bravo.) All three will be honored by the Rays at a pregame ceremony before the 7:10 p.m. game Friday.

Sen. Marco Rubio urges more U.S. action against Syria

WASHINGTON — Florida Sen. Marco Rubio on Wednesday called for the Obama administration to ratchet up the pressure on Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose regime has attacked antigovernment protesters.

The freshman senator joined fellow Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., John McCain, R-Ariz., and Ben Cardin, D-Maryland, at a Capitol Hill press conference, to unveil a resolution that urges President Barack Obama to expand sanctions against the Syrian government and speak out on the situation "directly, and personally."

Legislature kills bill that would have monitored sex at group homes

A popular bill that could have regulated sex between the developmentally disabled in group homes was thwarted by last-minute legislative infighting.

"Like many issues in the House, politics got in the way of good policy," said Sen. Ronda Storms, R-Valrico, whose committee authored the bill.
