Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will begin a seven-nation trip to Africa at the 8th U.S. – Sub-Saharan Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum (known as the AGOA Forum) in Nairobi, Kenya. This trip will highlight the Obama administration’s commitment to making Africa a priority and will be the earliest in any U.S. administration that both the President and the Secretary of State have visited Africa.

Question of the Week: What Issues Should be Addressed During the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue?

This week, the first joint meeting of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue will be held in Washington, D.C. from July 27-28, 2009. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner will be joined for the Dialogue by their respective Chinese Co-Chairs, State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vice Premier Wang Qishan. The Dialogue will focus on addressing the challenges and opportunities that both countries face on a wide range of bilateral, regional and global areas of immediate and long-term strategic and economic interests. This first meeting of the Dialogue also will set the stage for intensive, ongoing and future bilateral cooperative mechanisms.

Earlier this week, Secretary Clinton spoke before the Council on Foreign Relations. The Secretary said that the United States will lead by inducing greater cooperation among a greater number of actors, tilting the balance away from a multi-polar world toward a multi-partner world.

On Saturday, July 11, 2009, President Obama gives a major speech in Ghana, setting the tone for his policy towards Africa. The President previewed the vision he will lay out in an interview with AllAfrica.com.

During the interview, the President was asked how aid, investment and technology intersect in Africa. President Obama said:

In honor of our nation's 233rd birthday, Secretary Clinton delivered a video message for U.S. Embassies worldwide to play at their Fourth of July celebrations. Secretary Clinton said:

"For Americans, the Fourth of July is a day to reconnect with loved ones, to remember our history, and to renew our commitment to democracy, tolerance, and justice. As President Obama said in Cairo last month, these are not just American values, these are core principles we share with people everywhere."
