Gov. Togiola: “We thank God for sparing American Samoa of more devastation”

(UTULEI: Saturday, February 13, 2010) - The Cyclone Warning for the Territory of American Samoa was cancelled today at 6am by the National Weather Service in Tafuna, who then issued a Gale Warning, which was cancelled at 6pm.
Governor Togiola Tulafono issued the following statement after Tropical Cyclone Rene moved away from American Samoa:

We give thanks to God for his grace, mercy and loving kindness in allowing Cyclone Rene to spare American Samoa of more devastation than we can handle at this time.
Gov. Togiola prepares American Samoa for Cyclone Rene

(UTULEI: Friday, February 12, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today met with members of his Cabinet and emergency first responders as American Samoa braces for Cyclone Rene, which is scheduled to arrive on Tutuila at 9 o’clock tonight.In a briefing at the Territorial Emergency Management Coordination Office in Tafuna, Governor Togiola said the Territory’s emergency agencies are prepared and he expressed his gratitude for the preparation for Cyclone Rene.

(UTULEI: Monday, February 8, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today welcomed home Domata Peko, Rey Maualuga and Jonathan Fanene of the Cincinnati Bengals.
In welcome remarks at the Office of the Governor, Governor Togiola lauded the three NFL players on their achievements in the National Football League, which has put “American Samoa in the limelight.”
In a special presentation, Domata Peko, on behalf of his teammates, the Cincinnati Bengals and the people of Greater Cincinnati, presented to Governor Togiola a check in the amount of $40,500 as their contribution to the American Samoa Disaster Relief Fund.

(UTULEI: Saturday, February 6, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono on his weekly radio program –Mo Lou Silafia– gave a disaster update on the Permanent Housing Construction Program, the National Emergency Grant, and Disaster Unemployment Assistance that it was “moving along and going very well.”
Permanent Housing Construction Program
Governor Togiola said Construction Orders have been issued for three applicants. Fourteen applicants have had their Land Use Permits approved, while 32 are awaiting Site Inspection Requests.
The Construction Orders for houses for the three applicants are for two 2-bedrooms, and a 1-bedroom.

(UTULEI: Friday, February 5, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today paid tribute to Tualauta Senator Tuana’itau Fa’atamala Tuia at State funeral services held at the Fale Samoa of the American Samoa Legislature in Fagatogo.
Joined by First Lady Mary Ann Tulafono, Chief Justice Lealaialoa Michael Kruse, Senate President Gaoteote Palaie Tofau, House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale, lawmakers, Cabinet members, and children of the late senator, Governor Togiola said in honoring a great leader, it is more important to celebrate the memory of his achievements as a lawmaker, in his village of Pava’ia’i as the sa’o, in his church, in the courts as a counselor, where he helped many people he never knew.

(UTULEI: Saturday, January 30, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today on his weekly radio program gave an update on the Territory’s disaster recovery and rebuilding efforts.
Permanent Housing Construction Program
Governor Togiola said the plans for Direct Assistance, through the FEMA Permanent Housing Construction Program, are ongoing with 55 applicants who had total destruction of their home. To date 44 have received site inspections to determine site feasibility with 12 applicants who have approved land use permits. Each applicant is assigned a FEMA Case Worker to help with them through the process as they work towards actual construction of the new home.
San Diego State University graduates 25 ASG employees with M.A. in Education

(UTULEI: Friday, January 29, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today gave the commencement address for the San Diego State University (SDSU) Fall 2009 graduation at Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium (Fale Laumei) in Utulei.
With its graduation theme –“Take the initiative and lead the way; You can make the difference”-- Governor Togiola told the 25 Masters of Arts in Education graduates, with a specialization in Educational Leadership and Counseling, that their graduation “is one of the most satisfying moments of my watch at the helm of our ship.”
American Samoa Government wins on appeal, Progressive’s $6.6 million judgment against ASG reversed

(UTULEI: Tuesday, January 26, 2010) – Governor Togiola Tulafono today expressed his delight on the Appellate Court’s unanimous decision to reverse the $6.6 million judgment by Progressive Insurance Limited against the American Samoa Government (ASG).
“I wish to thank the Appellate Division of the High Court of American Samoa for rendering its decision in favor of ASG. We are pleased the Court has agreed with our position,” said Governor Togiola. “This was a very important court case for ASG and we are relieved that our taxpayers will no longer be burdened with the payment of $6.6 million to an insurance company.”
Gov. Togiola returns from Thailand COS meeting - “working together toward a mutually beneficial solution”

In Bangkok on January 18, 2010, Governor Togiola met with Chicken of the Sea Incorporated (COS) board member Mr. Thirapong Chansiri to discuss the future of the COS Samoa Packing facilities in American Samoa.
