United States Attorney Richard H. Stephens announced today that Dallas resident, Claude Monroe Napier, pled guilty yesterday in federal court to knowingly and willfully signing and filing a false joint 1996 Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Napier was charged in a one-count information filed April 18, 2001 with making false statements by overstating his wages and withholding amounts which resulted in a false claim for refund of $169,496. The Information further charged that Napier knew the amounts were false and that he was not entitled to a tax refund.

Napier admitted that he filed the false joint 1996 return which contained a written declaration that it was made under penalties of perjury.

Napier faces a maximum term of imprisonment of three years and a $100,000 fine. He is scheduled to be sentenced by the Honorable United States District Judge Terry Means on August 6, 2001.

United States Attorney Stephens praised the investigative work conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, Dallas Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David L. Jarvis.
