FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[United States Congress]

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. SERVICE ACADEMY DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 1st

Congressman Faleomavaega would like to remind those students interested in the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, that he is currently accepting applications for nominations.

“I will accept applications through Thursday, November 1, 2001 for the classes entering the academies in June, 2002.” said Faleomavaega.  “I should complete my review of all the applications by Monday, November 5, 2001, at which time I will select up to ten nominees to each academy.”  Federal law currently provides that only one candidate from American Samoa may be enrolled and accepted at each Academy.

“Each year, provided a slot is available, I have the distinct privilege of submitting to an academy the names of ten young men and women – those whom I believe to be the most qualified and have the best chances of gaining admission to one of the distinguished service academies.”  Faleomavaega added, “In order to assist me in selecting the best-qualified candidates, because of the high qualifying standards set forth by the academies, I will only consider applications that have a minimum Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) score of 1,000.”

There are five Military Service academies: the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the Military Academy, the Naval Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.  Of these, the Coast Guard Academy does not require that a candidate be nominated.  Interested students may apply directly to the Coast Guard Academy.

The eligibility requirements for the Academies are that an applicant must be:
  • at least 17 years of age and must not have passed his/her 23rd birthday on July 1 of the year of admission;
  • unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support a child, children or other individual;
  • a United States citizen (U.S. Nationals may be nominated but must obtain U.S. citizenship before graduating); and
  • of good moral character.
Candidates who are successful in gaining admission to one of the service academies, which are ranked among the top-rated educational institutions in the United States, can look forward to being challenged academically as well as physically.  They will also receive a four-year education valued at approximately $55,000 per year and a career as an officer in the U.S. Armed Forces.
