NEI Hazardous Air Pollutant Names
Introduction
This and subsequent pages list the names of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) used in EPA's National Emissions Inventory (NEI) database, along with their systematic chemical names and identifiers as defined by EPA's Chemical Identification Data Standard. The standard defines unique, unambiguous, chemically correct common names for all chemical substances and groups of substances regulated or monitored by EPA environmental programs.
The purpose of this table of HAP names is to:
- provide synonyms of HAP names used in AirData reports of NEI emissions data
- list the individual chemical compounds comprising HAP categories, such as "arsenic compounds"
Organization of the HAP names table
The list of NEI HAP names includes about 500 chemical substances. To make the list easier to view in a browser, we have divided it among 10 pages. The table below indicates which NEI category HAP names are included in each page.
Page 1 | Acetaldehyde - Butadiene |
Page 2 | Cadmium Compounds - Chromium Compounds |
Page 3 | Cobalt Compounds - Dimethoxybenzidine |
Page 4 | Dimethyl Phthalate - Ethylbenzene |
Page 5 | Ethylene Dibromide - Glycol Ethers |
Page 6 | Heptachlor - Manganese Compounds |
Page 7 | Mercury Compounds - Nitrobiphenyl |
Page 8 | Nitrophenol - Polycyclic Organic Matter |
Page 9 | Polycyclic Organic Matter - Selenium Compounds |

Columns in the HAP names table
The HAP names table includes the columns listed below. Column names that begin with category refer to HAPs listed in AirData reports. Column names that begin with pollutant refer to the substances that comprise HAP categories.
- Category HAP Name
- The name used in the NEI database and AirData reports for a chemical substance or a group of substances. The table lists these names in alphabetical order.
- Category CAS Number
- Chemical Abstracts Service registry number for the HAP category. In most instances, a group of substances does not have a CAS number, since the purpose of a CAS number is to identify a specific chemical compound.
- Category Systematic Name
- The "9th Collective Index" name of a chemical substance. This form of the name describes the molecular composition of a substance.
- Category EPA ID Number
- EPA-assigned identification code for the chemical substance or group of substances. This item is a part of the EPA Chemical Identification Standard.
- Category EPA Name
- EPA standard name for the chemical substance or group of substances. This item is a part of the EPA Chemical Identification Standard.
- Pollutant NEI Code
- Identification code used in the NEI database for a chemical substance.
- Pollutant NEI Name
- Name used in the NEI database for a chemical substance.
- Pollutant CAS Number
- Chemical Abstracts Service registry number for a chemical substance.
- Pollutant Systematic Name
- The "9th Collective Index" name of a chemical substance. This form of the name describes its molecular composition.
- Pollutant EPA Name
- EPA standard name for a chemical substance. This item is a part of the EPA Chemical Identification Standard.
