BERRY, LINCOLN AND PRYOR ANNOUNCE GRANTS TO BENEFIT FIREFIGHTERS

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Marion Berry (AR-01) along with U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor  today announced federal grant funding for Arkansas fire departments through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program.

In Arkansas's First Congressional District, three fire departments were awarded federal grant money. The Keiser Volunteer Fire Department will receive $190,000 for Vehicle Acquisition. Two other fire departments will receive funding for operations and safety. They are the Hopewell Fire District, which will receive $30,978, and the Horseshoe Lake Volunteer Fire Department, which will receive $86,925.

"The courageous men and women who serve in local communities to protect our health and well-being are in great need of new and better resources," said Berry. "These firefighters put their lives on the line everyday and we owe it to them to give them the training and equipment they need to do their jobs as safely and effectively as possible."

"As first responders, our local firefighters play an integral role in keeping our communities safe," Lincoln said. "These federal dollars will allow firefighting personnel in Northeast Arkansas to continue to provide the best possible service. I remain committed to ensuring that our state receives the resources and funding it needs to keep residents safe."

"Our firefighters work on the front lines of danger in order to keep our families and communities out of harm's way," said Pryor. "These federal dollars are a wise reinvestment that will ensure these local heroes are as safe as possible while on the job."

The AFG program is intended to enhance first responders' ability to protect the health and safety of the public. AFG program grants through the Operations and Safety Program Area are awarded to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations for training, equipment, personal protective equipment, wellness and fitness, and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities.
