Snow casts a sheer veil across the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, rendering the land in shades of grey and white. Snow lies thickest on the Canadian side of the border north of Vermont and New Hampshire, though a heavy ribbon of snow also runs down into southeastern New York state.

Off the Atlantic coast, layers of clouds float in crisscrossing patterns. Low-level clouds ripple in waves and little bunches, while a higher layer is thin and gauzy. Below the clouds, the Atlantic itself is a mass of almost-black water, highlighted here and there with streaks of green and aqua. This true-color Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image was acquired on January 15, 2004.
