Public Safety

Councilor Mayer believes the first priority in governing is keeping the public safe. Most recently, she has:

• Allocated about $500,000 in grant money this year to APD, paying for new equipment, technology and seat-belt enforcement.
• Serves on the Public Safety Committee.
• Member of the Board of Directors for Crime Stoppers.

Seniors

District 7 has a large population of Senior Citizens still living independently in their homes. Councilor Mayer believes the City should continue to expand Senior programs like the Senior Volunteer Program and Foster Grandparent Program Senior Companion Program in order to make it easier for Seniors to stay in their homes. 

• Secured more than $6.1 million for Albuquerque’s senior citizens, funding the foster grandparent and senior volunteer programs.
• Continues to update and refurbish the Palo Duro Senior Center. 
• Increased funding through State and Federal grants, and City funds for the Retired and Senior Volunteer and Foster Grandparent Programs.

Low and Moderate Income

In eight years on the Council, Councilor Mayer has worked to ensure that the economically disadvantaged have a fair shot at success.

• Put $250,000 toward the Roadrunner Food Bank, which feeds needy Albuquerque families
• Sponsored the bill to secure $500,000 for the Barrett Foundation’s homeless center.

Economic Development

Councilor Mayer firmly believes that a healthy economy is key to Albuquerque’s success. Recently, she has:

• Instrumental in rewriting the Uptown Sector Plan to encourage redevelopment while protecting the surrounding neighborhoods.
• Supported the expansion of the city’s General Mills plant, creating about 60 jobs.
• Advocated for Mesa Del Sol, which is now home to Albuquerque Studios, Schott Solar, Fidelity Investment and Molina Healthcare, and is slated to bring in 50,000 jobs over the next 35 to 50 years.

Protect and Strengthen Neighborhoods

Councilor Mayer works to encourage commercial redevelopment while protecting the single family neighborhoods that make up the majority of District 7:

• Allocated more than $1.5 million for road safety improvements in District 7 for installing streetlights, speed humps and sidewalks on some of the area’s busiest streets, including Candelaria, Constitution and Wyoming. 
• Put more than $1.5 million into medians in District 7, including those on Louisiana, Indian School, Comanche and Candelaria.

Park Improvements

Councilor Mayer has long been an advocate for park revitalization in Albuquerque. She has set-aside a total of $4.2 million for District 7’s parks, which has covered a number of projects.

• Tennis complex and computer room at Jerry Cline
• Play area at Vista Verde Park
• Basketball court at Hoffman Park
• Dog park at Stardust Skies Park
• New playground at Alvarado Park and Quigley Park to replace the very old original playgrounds
• New playground for Snow Heights Park

Animal Issues

Councilor Mayer has been a voice for Albuquerque’s most vulnerable, sponsoring the HEART ordinance to ensure the city’s animals are kept safe and treated humanely.
