NIAID's Role in Malaria Research
NIAID is the lead agency in the U.S. federal government supporting malaria research and development. The Institute has a longstanding commitment to malaria research to support the goals of reducing morbidity and mortality from malaria and ultimately eradicating the disease.
To accomplish these goals, NIAID focuses on
- understanding the biology of malaria parasites and their interactions with mosquito vectors and human hosts
- developing tools needed for effective and sustainable malaria prevention, treatment, and control
- enhancing research infrastructure in malaria endemic-countries
- encouraging global cooperation
