Description: A small to medium-sized tree occurring naturally in the eastern portion of our region. It is used on a wide variety of sites for erosion control, shelterbelts and wildlife plantings throughout Oklahoma and Texas. Twigs have short, strong, paired, catclawshaped thorns. Black locust is a legume, and the inner bark, young leaves and seeds are poisonous to livestock and humans. The wood is strong and durable. Can be difficult to control once established.
