IRI - Columbia University Students Link Climate Science with Humanitarian Work

In 2009, ten graduate students from IRI's Climate and Society Master's Program at Columbia University traveled to developing countries to support the work of the Red Cross / Red Crescent Climate Centre. To share the insights they gained for linking climate information with humanitarian decisions in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, they produced this short film.

CPO Representatives Participate in the Third World Climate Conference in Geneva

News Article; CPO's Ko Barrett at WCC-3
CPO's Ko Barrett at WCC-3
At the third World Climate Conference (WCC-3) in Geneva, Switzerland, some 2,500 policymakers and resource managers from more than 150 countries met with scientific experts from August 31-September 4. A major outcome from the conference was the decision to establish a Global Framework for Climate Services, an effort that aims to meet accelerating demands for information required to address the impacts of climate change.

The conference brought together those who collect and develop climate information with those who need it, setting in motion an unprecedented opportunity to design an international system that will inform decision-making in a way that is similar to how weather services work today, but on a longer time scale. Climate services would include the broad range of information and products that users require to address their needs, including data collection, technical assessment, analysis and prediction, and the ability to interpret and apply the information for their own use.

Short-lived Tropical Storm Chantal forms 210 miles south of Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 31, 2007
A NOAA-led team of scientists has found that the apparent increase in the number of tropical storms and hurricanes recorded since the late 19th and early 20th centuries is likely attributable to improvements in observational tools and analysis techniques rather than an actual increase in the number of storms.

This fall, Dr. Diane Stanitski will teach two sections of the upper level course, Global Climate Change, to midshipmen in the Oceanography Department at the United States Naval Academy. During the semester, Stanitski will incorporate current NOAA science into her presentations, and share her experiences working in the NOAA Climate Observation Division of the Climate Program Office with the students. Lectures and labs will incorporate study of national policies such as the development of a National Climate Service, and utilize an array of climate data records.

Official Solicitation for Climate Process and Modeling
Teams Proposals

The official solicitation for proposals for the Climate Process and Modeling Teams (CPT) is now available on the NSF website.

The key aim of the Climate Process Modeling Team concept is to speed development of global coupled climate models and reduce uncertainties in climate models by bringing together theoreticians, field observationalists, process modelers and the large modeling centers to concentrate on the scientific problems facing climate models today.

CPT activities are supported by NOAA, NASA and NSF. All CPT proposals should be submitted to NSF by September 24, 2009. Full applications from principal investigators seeking partial or full-funding support from NOAA must be received and validated by www.grants.gov, postmarked, or provided to a delivery service by 5 p.m. ET, September 15, 2009. Applications received after that time will not be considered for funding.

NOAA Climate Program Funding Opportunities

In preparation for the early July publication of the 2010 funding opportunity announcement, information on individual programs that will be accepting project applications and the optional Letter of Intent process is now available.
