June 2009 - Ozone & Your Health

This month's Air Shed focuses on ground-level ozone and its impact on human health and the environment. May's Ozone Air Quality Index was in the Good range (0-50), and June may follow the same tack with moderate temperatures and some early monsoon weather. Despite the cooler temperatures, ozone remains a serious summer health concern. So plan accordingly, call 311 or 768-4734 for the daily AQI. Read-up on some new motor vehicle legislation that Congress has proposed to reduce ozone and greenhouse gas production, support the auto manufacturing industry, and conserve fuel. May 2009 - It's Car Care Month!

Every spring and fall, we celebrate Car Care Month! Why, you might ask? Seasonal changes in May and November provide good opportunities to perform important routine vehicle maintenance on our second largest investment - our car. We depend on vehicles for so many transportation related tasks: work, family, and recreation. Americans are very dependant on our vehicles, but there's room for improvement in terms of maintaining that investment. Let’s all protect our quality of life by taking care of our car!

August 2009 - Health, CARS and Climate Town Halls

The Air Shed covers more information about the CARS plan as well as preliminary health results from a DISCOVER grant program from the Columbia University - School of Public Health. This month's Air Shed also includes an invitation from Mayor Martin J. Chávez to add your voice to local Climate Action Plan Town Halls that will take place during the month of August.

July 2009 - Indoor airPLUS

July's Air Shed focuses on several key programs and initiatives. The Indoor airPLUS program for new home buyers and for remodeling existing houses provides key elements of construction technologies and materials designed to improve indoor air and conserve energy. The Air Shed also contains information about the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act; proposed legislation to strengthen the Nitrogen Dioxide National Ambient Air Quality Standard; and the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, all which are intended to protect human health, the environment, minimize our dependence on fossil fuels, and control climate change.
