SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON BAY BRIDGE DESIGN
From the single, elegant tower to the unique asymmetric shape of the Self-Anchored Suspension Span, the new Bay Bridge is a testament to innovative design and aesthetics. On November 29, the second installment of the free Joseph Nicoletti Lecture Series focused on the aesthetics of the new East Span and how the design of the forthcoming engineering icon came to be. Clive Endress (Senior Landscape Architect), Michael Fitzpatrick (Bridge Architect from T.Y. Lin International) and Donald MacDonald (of Donald MacDonald Architects) discussed the innovative look of California’s largest public works project.

YERBA BUENA ISLAND TRANSITION STRUCTURE UPDATE
Crews have completed the post-tensioning process on the Yerba Buena Island Transition Structure (YBITS), bolstering the strength of the existing concrete. Workers will spend the next few weeks pouring the last of the concrete and removing the temporary steel structure built to support the span during construction. YBITS will connect the Self-Anchored Suspension Span (SAS) to Yerba Buena Island (YBI) and transition the new East Span’s side-by-side road decks to the upper and lower decks of the YBI Tunnel and West Span. OAKLAND TOUCHDOWN CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Crews began building the rest of the Oakland Touchdown’s (OTD) eastbound deck in June; the westbound deck and approximately half of the eastbound deck were completed in June 2010. Detours near the Toll Plaza have shifted traffic away from construction, allowing workers to finish building eastbound deck. Find out more>
