New U.S Ambassador Arrives in London

The U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James's, Louis B. Susman, was sworn in on July 29 by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Marjorie Susman looks on.

Touching down at Heathrow on a direct flight from Chicago, President Obama’s new Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Louis Susman and wife Marjorie Susman, arrived in London this morning.

“Marjorie and I are delighted to be here in the United Kingdom. And I am grateful to the President for the confidence that he’s shown in asking me to represent the United States with our most trusted ally,” Ambassador Susman said on arrival. “I’m ready to get to work on issues such as our mission in Afghanistan, climate change and the global economic recovery, which are important to all of us.”

The U.S. Senate confirmed Ambassador Susman’s nomination on July 9, 2009. Ambassador Susman was sworn into office on July 29 in Washington, D.C. by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Foreign Secretary David Miliband was among the guests at the ceremony, which also included prominent American politicians and family members.

A banker and a lawyer with extensive experience, Ambassador Susman has served in leadership positions with Citigroup and Salomon Brothers, as well as with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. Ambassador Susman has long been active in the public and non-profit sector. As a member of the U. S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, he helped provide oversight of U.S. public diplomacy around the world. He serves as a member of the Chairman’s Circle of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and a member of the board of the world-renowned Art Institute of Chicago and the Northwestern Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Ambassador Susman received his A.B. from the University of Michigan in 1959 and his LL.B. from Washington University in 1962 where he was elected to Phi Delta Phi. He is married to the former Marjorie Sachs. They have two children and three grandchildren.
