K9 Unit

The safety and security of the BART system and its riders, employees, and surrounding communities are paramount concerns of the BART Police Department.

One vital tool that the department has to keep the public safe and secure is its police canines. The BART PD K-9 Unit has nine canines, all of which are trained in explosives detection.

Now on BART TV:
Video Meet BART's K-9 unit

K-9 teams deter crime and terrorism through highly visible patrols and their explosives-detection capability. They are often seen walking through train cars, stations, and parking facilities.

Our canines are German shepherds and each is assigned to an officer-handler. When not on the job, the canines are a part of the officer's family. Our dedicated and highly trained police canines are truly BART's best friends.
